Employee's of the month!
We are catching up from the summer craziness and this is our first Scoop Newsletter, so we need to recognize past and current employee's of the month. Choosing only one employee of the month, is like choosing the best ScoopAble Ice Cream. Just because others were not chosen that month, it doesn't mean they are not amazing.
July's employee of the month was Veronica. Veronica's favorite flavor of ScoopAble Ice Cream is Strawberry and her favorite color is pink. In May, Veronica graduated high school. She is an original hire with a fun and respectful personality. She really enjoys serving customers and adding all the toppings. Veronica's scoop skills and hard work earned her the first ScoopAble employee of the month.
The August employee of the month is Iver. Iver's favorite ScoopAble Ice Cream flavor is chocolate. Iver is also an original hire with the gift of communicating without verbal words. He welcomes everyone with a smile. Iver is in a competitive culinary program in his school. Iver has been loyal and a very hard worker and will complete anything we ask of him to do around the shop.
The inside scoop from Amy
Greetings!
I personally wanted to thank you for all your support in the launching of ScoopAble Ice Cream. Being a small business owner has been a dream of mine for so many years. Providing employment for individuals with disabilities and supporting the disability community has been the heart of every entrepreneur venture I have dreamed of or accomplished.
Making and serving ice cream has been so much fun! ScoopAble is a place of fun, happiness, making someone's day better or brighter, and creating positive memories with family and friends. Ice cream brings people together in community. It couldn't be more rewarding. But it is, because I also get to work with the most inspiring and loyal employees.
I've been asked a lot about how the business is going. I feel the pressure that so many are invested in the outcome of the success of this business. Here is were I show my insecurities and worries. Ice cream is a strong summer business, with the expected lower sales in the colder months. We had a very strong start. May and June went just as projected. Then, July hit. There's something about extreme heat, storms everyday and night, being new and not a lot of people hearing about us, and people traveled far to try us once, but they were not going to travel that far every month. The newness wore off, and the sales dipped. We met a little over half the projected sales in July. This is even more stressful because I'm a new business owner and I'm digging out of a hole and not in a position to make the hole any bigger. The employees have been very understanding, but their hours have had to be cut to a minimum. I don't get government handouts, there are no grants in this area to assist with my payroll or small business. I'm not a nonprofit that has a donor base or a connection rich board. I rely on sales to keep afloat. August has been better, but with school just starting, it's reliably going to be another dip in sales. The unexpected HVAC repair in early August made for even more financial stress and a super-hot workday.
In order to keep this going and keep it strong, I need the community's support. Every scoop, every person, really does make a difference. Every purchase is not lining my pockets, its paying the bills and the payroll to keep the doors open and the jobs available for the employees.
I don't want to come off as desperate, but I am about being real, and there is an urgency that the business is facing as we go into the colder months. How can you make a difference? Share the amazing memories you made at ScoopAble Ice Cream with everyone you know. Come in (even on the wet and cold days) for a heartwarming experience. Enjoy a scoop and bring a friend or two. You may also donate or help fill our Amazon wish list.
I cannot thank you all enough for the support so far. This is just the beginning of a long and prosperous journey. No one said it was going to be easy, but it is going to be worth it.
Have a sweet day!
Amy
