Emmy’s Mini Scoop: What’s Really Behind the Counter

If you’ve ever visited our wonderful shop (which I recommend you do if you haven’t already) it’s likely you stayed in the dining area, and didn’t enter the employees only area.

So that begs the question: what really happens behind the counter?

Emmy, literally behind the counter

Of course, you see us scooping ice cream, ringing people up, and maybe even cleaning. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, and you’re about to glance at the whole thing.

If you remember my last blog, I said that this place was more than just a job. But that doesn’t mean we’re having a party back there. It's a healthy medium.

If you were a fly on the wall and could see what we were doing back there (which would not be great for sanitary reasons) you would be surprised at all we do.

I think every employee here has to learn multitasking. Sometimes we’ll have customers and we’ll have to help them while doing the dishes and mopping. How could you tell I’m on the closing shift most of the time?

But aside from the responsibility we have, we also have a lot of fun. We’ve mastered the ability of talking while focusing on the task at hand whenever the store is quiet. Sometimes we get ahead of the game and have already done all that we can do, so we hang out and enjoy each other’s company during the low times, then we become completely focused during the peak times.

So what’s really behind the counter? Well, it’s a lot of hard work and learning new things, making mistakes along the way and growing stronger. And that’s the purpose of having a job.

Where ScoopAble excels is the moments between coworkers and customers that I will always remember, and the feeling that I can be Emmy. Not just an employee. I am valued not just because I scoop ice cream and handle the register and mop the floors. I am valued because of my unique strengths, and my personality, and my eagerness to become stronger and learn more things.

Behind the counter is not just a kitchen and an office. It’s a place to love, grow, and to be you, not just an employee.
